ANA (All Nippon Airways) has a new promotion for elite members where they can score unlimited confirmed free upgrades to premium economy for all economy fare bookings! You can stack this with some awesome flight deals from the US to Thailand, which currently are around $500! Read on for more details.
According to ANA’s special promotion page, all diamond, platinum, and super flyers members are eligible for the promotion. This promotion is also eligible for all ANA flights that board from October 1st, 2019 to March 31st, 2020. The upgrade reservation period just went live on Sept 27, 2019.
Note: codeshare flights are NOT eligible, so if you booked through United Airlines or any other star alliance carrier, you will not be able to upgrade.
If any of you are an elite status holder flying ANA on economy in the coming months, you should check your itinerary immediately and check if you can upgrade to premium economy.
Below are step by step instructions on how you can upgrade to premium economy. Note that this is the USA website; other regional website may have slight differences.
Step 1: Look up your reservations by clicking at the “My Booking” tab on the left side and clicking “View Reservations” or entering your reservation information.
Step 2: Look for the “Request an upgrade” button on your itinerary. Click it and you should get to an upgrade page.
Step 3: Continue on with the prompts by clicking “Request”
Step 4: Choose your segments, continue through the prompts and either request a waitlist or confirm.
We’ll go over a quick example on how you can confirm a premium economy round trip ticket on ANA from NYC to Bangkok!

If you have either diamond, platinum, or super flyers status on ANA, you can confirm premium economy tickets for just $500!

Below is a sample booking and how you can confirm premium economy upgrades if you have status!
After you click next, scroll towards the middle of the page to click “Reflect Upgrade Availability”.
You’ll see that for the $500 deal, there are premium economy seats available and you can then request an upgrade immediately at the reservations page once everything is confirmed and ticketed.
On top of this $500 deal and a confirmed premium economy upgrade for elite statuses, you will get 5,752 miles per person (and more if you have elite status). On top of that, you can use the American Express Platinum card to get 5x miles back (which will equate to 2,500 miles). Hence, if you have elite status, you can spend $500, get a premium economy upgrade and get over 10,000 miles back! This is unheard of and if you can take advantage of this, it is amazing!! We would fly back and forth every week if we had unlimited vacation!!
Even if you don’t have status, $500 for a round trip ticket on an amazing airline to Thailand is a steal!
Final Thoughts
It’s amazing that ANA is being so generous on this promotion. However, there is an unfortunate downside to this promotion. At the end of this promotion, premium status members will no longer be able to get free upgrades to premium economy anymore. In order to upgrade to premium economy, one would have to buy an upgradable economy class ticket (S fare or higher) and pay a significant amount of miles to upgrade.
